Who are Wade & Bell?

Before we were a creative agency, Wade & Bell were giants.

According to North Yorkshire folklore, Wade and his wife Bell lived among the moors - figures so large and powerful that the landscape itself is said to carry the marks of their lives.

Bell made her home at Mulgrave Castle, while Wade set to work on Pickering Castle. Between them, they had just one hammer. So as they built, they hurled it back and forth across miles of open land, calling out warnings into the wind before it came soaring through the sky.

It’s the kind of image that sticks with you, two giants, shaping the world around them, one throw at a time.

But their story stretches far beyond castles.

To help Bell take her cattle out onto the moors, Wade carved a road through the landscape - what became known as Wade’s Causeway. Bell played her part too, gathering stones in her apron as she went. But one day, the strings gave way, scattering rock across the moorland. Even now, people say that’s why the ground there is strewn with stone.

And like any great story, theirs wasn’t without conflict.

During an argument, Wade scooped up a vast chunk of earth and hurled it towards Bell. He missed. The earth landed and formed Blakey Topping, while the hollow it left behind became the Hole of Horcum - a dramatic reminder of a moment that reshaped the land forever.

Why It Matters to Us

Now, whether you believe these stories or not is beside the point.
